Old(er) travelers are troves of life lessons and good advice. One piece of advice I always receive and will generously share with you all is:
“travel while you’re young.”
It appears that when you’re older you don’t have as much energy to see and do all the things you want…Makes sense!
I’ve never been much into dieting and exercise, not because I never felt the need, but rather, I never had the right motivation. Sure, I’d like to have a beach bod all year round and an instagram gallery of colorful, healthy, farm-to-table food art. But these goals are kind of superficial and unnecessary, so it’s easy to make excuses like, “I can live without a beach bod” or “Meh, heirloom tomatoes are expensive!”
But NOW, now that I have this passionate desire to travel the world, I am motivated to whip myself into shape! If I want to see and do all the things I dream of, I must be in good health! With this goal in mind, I have started a few routines that I’m quite proud of:
- start my mornings with a glass of warm water with lemon and honey
- do a little yoga daily (I just finished day 8 of 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the most routine I’ve stuck with in who knows how long…)
- eat a hearty breakfast and lunch, and a light dinner with lots of veggies
- drink at least 4 cups of water throughout the day (I need to learn to stay hydrated)
- I just started rock-climbing! So. much. fun!!
I’ve never been more certain about what I wanted to do with my life than to travel, such that it has become the ultimate goal that all my little daily goals are leading up to, like getting healthy! The best part about this is how good I feel, physically and mentally.
Perhaps I’m finally beginning to understand what my Chinese elders exclaim to me all the time… “Health is wealth!” Ahh…good old Chinese wisdom… (as my aunt asks if I want to have a fried chicken wing at 11:30 pm).
