Today, I begin a new series of posts: letters to individuals who have shaped my life in small but profound ways. All of these lessons stem from conversations with people I meet randomly, some as short as 2 minutes.
Growing up I was taught me to be wary of neighbors, to not trust strangers, and absolutely no candy from them unless it’s Halloween (how does that make any sense??). But some of the most fascinating conversations I’ve shared have been with people I met on the street picking bottles, feeding squirrels in the park, lounging on the beach in a foreign country, sipping tea on the guesthouse deck…
Most recently I was approached by Bobo the Clown in the Boston subway; he asked if I was an ABC (“American Born Chinese” — this question intrigued me), asked me to be his Chinese language partner, then hinted at marriage, and proceeded to ask for my number to which I politely declined. Okay, so I didn’t learn any life lessons from this guy, but what a story to tell! And I have sooo many more to share!!
